Primary Writing with Ross Young

For Primary Teachers

EndedRockingham Professional Development Centre

Service Description

The morning session will include an input from Paddy Carroll, Y6 teacher from Hayfield Lane Primary, Doncaster. Paddy will share how the work that his school has done with Ross Young has made an impact on his pupils’ writing and explore the school’s ‘Writing for Pleasure’ journey. Ross will lead two sessions, designed for teachers: Session 1: Personal Writing Projects Personal writing projects are those that children pursue for themselves, allowing them to use everything they know and love about writing to create something personally and socially meaningful. When children are invited to choose their own writing topics, rather than having them assigned, they write with verve, swagger, and confidence because they are writing from a position of strength and knowledge. Research shows that supporting children's authorial agency, when combined with high-quality instruction, can lead to remarkable academic progress and allows children to take full independent responsibility for their composition. This session will explore how your school can implement these projects. Session 2: Pupil-Conferencing Pupil-conferencing is the practice of providing powerful, in-the-moment verbal feedback and individualised responsive instruction while children are actually engaged in the act of writing. As one of the identified fourteen principles of world-class writing teaching, conferencing can have a significant impact. It boosts children's motivation, self-belief and academic outcomes. This workshop guides teachers through the three parts of quality verbal feedback. Participants will learn how these short, purposeful conversations can move writers forward and develop independence, including specific guidance for supporting children with SEND and those new to English. Cost: £49 per person | Included for those subscribing to RoSIS
