The mosque is located just outside the city centre of Sheffield, in the multi-cultural Nether Edge and Sharrow Ward. This area has an active local Muslim population for over 50 years. Muslims are now the second largest religious community in the area (23%) and 44% of the ward population are from a black or ethnic minority background. However, 83.3% of residents here identify as British regardless of their religious or ethnic background. The mosque is purpose built on the site of a local Co-op store which became too small for the growing congregation after many years of use. The refurbishment work of the building was completed by 2006. The cost of the new development, including infrastructure, landscaping and internal works is about £5.5 million.
