Brecks Community Orchard
Whiston Meadows

Brecks Community Orchard and Wildflower Meadow is located off Brecks Lane in Rotherham. The site was established in 2023 with fruit trees like apple, plum, cherry, and pear. The community is encouraged to pick fruit for free.
About the orchard
Purpose: The orchard was initiated by a Rotherham Council ranger to bring the community together and provide free fruit. The ethos is to "bring back the sense of community" and encourage people to enjoy the outdoors and share with neighbours.
Location: The orchard is on former agricultural land off Brecks Road.
Features: In addition to the orchard, the site includes a large wildflower meadow for enhanced biodiversity. Benches and chainsaw carvings have also been installed for visitors to enjoy the area.
Volunteers: The project received support from volunteers, local groups, and schools for planting trees and woodland bulbs.

Whiston Meadows in Rotherham is a marshy floodplain area that is a popular spot for walkers and birdwatchers. Located within the larger village of Whiston, it is known for its extensive wildflower meadows and is often incorporated into local walking routes.
Features
Wildlife and Nature: The meadows are part of the broader Rother Valley and are known to be visited by various wading birds, such as the Little Ringed Plover and Redshank. The area's grassland and scrub habitats are home to a variety of plants, invertebrates, and small mammals.
Walking Trails: The meadows are an integral part of several local walking routes, including Doorstep Walks and longer trails like the Trans Pennine Trail. Some paths can become muddy during the winter, so boots are advisable after wet weather.
