Maltby East Ward
Roche Abbey

Roche Abbey is a ruined 12th-century Cistercian monastery located in a wooded valley near Maltby, Rotherham, in South Yorkshire, England. The site is managed by English Heritage and features extensive ruins, particularly the soaring early Gothic church transepts.
History
Founding: The abbey was founded in 1147 by Cistercian monks from Newminster Abbey in Northumberland.
Medieval life: At its peak around 1175, the community consisted of approximately 50 monks and 100 lay brothers. It featured medieval waterworks, with a stream flowing through the site that served the abbey's latrines.
The Dissolution: The monastery was surrendered during the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1538 under Henry VIII. The buildings were subsequently pillaged by locals and dismantled.
Capability Brown: In the 1770s, landscape designer Lancelot "Capability" Brown was hired by the Earl of Scarbrough to create a picturesque setting for the ruins. He levelled many of the remaining structures and covered the foundations with turf.
Excavation and preservation: Later antiquarian excavations, particularly in the 1920s, uncovered the original foundations. English Heritage took over the site in 1984.
Features and visitor information
The Ruins: The site features the extensive foundations of the monastic complex, with the church's eastern transepts still standing to their original height. The well-preserved 14th-century gatehouse also remains.
Woodland Walks: The tranquil and picturesque valley includes riverside and woodland walks that can be enjoyed outside the ticketed area, even during the winter closure.
On-site facilities: On-site facilities can be limited, with some reviews mentioning the closure of the gift shop, toilets, and cafe. It is best to check the English Heritage website for the most current information.
