Leading Thinking - Maths through Stories

Dr Natthapoj Vincent Trakulphadetkrai, Associate Professor at the University of Reading

EndedRockingham Professional Development Centre

Service Description

Building on the success of events in 2023, our 'Leading Thinking' Events, in partnership with RWM Doncaster, aim to bring leading educational thinkers to the region, giving educators the opportunity to reflect on their own thinking, their beliefs and their practice. The events also provide the opportunity for networking, discussion, and the sharing of best practice. In the morning workshop, participants will learn about the different types of mathematical story picture books and how they can be integrated into mathematics teaching and learning through examining well-selected case studies. They will also learn how teaching mathematics using story picture books can be a pedagogically powerful strategy and explore its underpinning theories. They will also learn about some of the key selection criteria to ensure that only high-quality mathematical story picture books are selected and used. Participants will then be shown how they can continue to receive (free) support through the speaker's non-profit MathsThroughStories.org website and how they can be part of this initiative going forward. In the afternoon workshop, participants will learn how asking students to create mini mathematical story picture books could help the students develop their mathematical understanding - as drawn from key findings of the speaker's own empirical research. Participants will then be assigned into teams to collaboratively plan for and create a mini mathematical story picture book whereby each team will later share their work with the rest of the cohort. Finally, participants will be introduced to the Young Mathematical Story Authors (YMSA) competition and they will learn about how they can support their own students to take part in this international event. There will be several hands-on interactive activities throughout the workshops and there will also be plenty of time allocated for Q&A at the end of each workshop. This workshop will be useful for both participants who are new to the idea of using story picture books in mathematics teaching and those who have had some experience in using the resource and approach. Costs: no additional charge for schools purchasing the Core Offer to RoSIS, £95 per person for others.
