Service Description

Autumn - ‘Developing pupils oracy and literacy through history’. Developing pupils’ reading and writing has long been a priority for schools. Of equal importance, though, is developing pupils’ oracy, as advocated by campaigns such as Voice 21. Effective, enquiry-based history teaching will naturally create opportunities to engage and support pupils in reading, writing and talking about the subject, otherwise known as disciplinary literacy. This in turn will support pupils wider skills of literacy and oracy. 12th November at Rockingham PDC, repeated on 20th November at Albion House Spring Term focussing on ‘Teaching about migration through history’. Britain’s population, language and culture have long been shaped by migration. Migration stories are interwoven into many of the units specified in Key Stages 1 and 2, creating the opportunity to take this theme through from the Stone Age to the Windrush and beyond. History, therefore, offers an opportunity to consider why migration happens, what benefits it can bring but also why it can be seen as a threat by some. 26th February at Rockingham PDC, repeated on 11th March at Albion House Summer Term focussing on ‘Curriculum design – meeting the requirements of the revised Ofsted and National Curriculum frameworks’. 2025/26 will see the introduction of a revised Ofsted inspection framework, and also the expected release of the revised National Curriculum. This session will explore the implications of these changes for schools and how they might respond in order to ensure that their approach to curriculum, pedagogy and assessment in history remains coherent and compliant. 2nd June at Rockingham PDC, repeated on 10th June at Albion House Cost: Schools and settings accessing the Core Offer to RoSIS have unlimited access to the subject leader networks. Non-subscribing schools and settings can choose to purchase this package separately at £2,040 per school or individually at £510 per subject area, per school.
