Developing Subject Leadership

Facilitated by Chris Jennings, on behalf of RoSIS

Started 10 OctRockingham Professional Development Centre

Service Description

Adapted following feedback from last year’s cohort and facilitated by our Associate Leader, Chris Jennings, this six-session programme is aimed at Subject Leaders in primary schools who are keen to provide, and receive, peer challenge and support with their curriculum plans. Chris was a successful Headteacher for over 27 years in Rotherham and Sheffield: this included time as an Executive Headteacher. He has a deep knowledge of curriculum design and school leadership at all levels. He was heavily involved in system leadership as a Beacon School Head and a National Leader of Education for 12 years and spent time as an Adviser and SIP in Rotherham, responsible for assessment. The aim of the programme is to equip subject leaders with a deep knowledge of the curriculum and its impact on all learners. During each session, subject leaders will be encouraged to build their understanding of how and why the curriculum builds crucial knowledge over time and how well all pupils are learning, retaining and using that knowledge. Delegates are expected to attend all 6 sessions, at Rockingham PDC from 13:00 - 15:30, in full, to achieve maximum impact from the programme and are asked to bring their subject curriculum plans with them, either on a laptop or in paper form - whichever they use and whichever suits them. Friday, 10th October Thursday, 6th November Monday, 8th December Day 4 and Day 5 will be two afternoons, to be organised by participants, where reciprocal visits take place to learning partner’s schools. On each afternoon delegates will take 45 minutes to examine the curriculum and identify the intended learning. They will then spend twenty-five minutes crafting questions to ask pupils from two different year groups in order to gain a clear understanding of whether the intended learning has actually landed. Next, together, participants will meet with groups of eight pupils from the selected year groups and pose the questions, noting the responses and answers. Each session should last 30 minutes. Finally, there will be thirty minutes to discuss findings and agree next steps. The final day, Thursday, 5th March is an opportunity for each member of the group to feedback on what they have discovered, changes they have made and next steps. Senior leaders from participating schools are invited. Cost: One place per school for those accessing the Core Offer to RoSIS, additional places charged at £95 per person £195 per person for others.
