These sessions will be co-delivered with Sarah Davis, Subject lead for history, King Edward VII School, Sheffield. The core catch-ups are ‘repeats’ of subject leader sessions delivered in previous years in Rotherham, but not in Sheffield. They are additional to the termly network meetings which will have the same content in both Rotherham and Sheffield. Rotherham subject leaders may want to attend them. This session will focus on practical approaches to teaching historical interpretations in a meaningful but accessible way in the primary classroom. Teaching historical interpretations can be seen as complex and challenging, but is a key part of the primary history curriculum and can be made accessible and enjoyable for pupils. Links will be made to current research and to frameworks including the National Curriculum and Ofsted. As outcomes of the session, subject leaders will know and understand: - What historians mean by ‘interpretations’ and what different types there are - How and where to locate interpretations in curriculum and lesson design - What progress in pupils’ skills and understanding looks like and how to measure this The session will include practical ideas and resources for teaching to take away and adapt.
