Developing Quality in Teaching Across the Curriculum

  • Ended
  • Rockingham Professional Development Centre

Service Description

The attention on the curriculum in the last few years has focused upon the organisation of content to ensure coherence and progression. If we want to make real impact, then the essential link between the curriculum plan and teaching has to be strong. This one day session will focus upon how we make the curriculum effective where it most matters: in the classroom with children. The focus will be the foundation subjects, though aspects of English and mathematics will be included. The day is aimed at 'Curriculum Leaders', either head teachers, senior leaders, phase leaders or subject leaders, with a focus upon: what the curriculum is and making the most of it; meeting Ofsted expectations without being a slave to them; what progression looks like; the idea of 'greater depth' across foundation subjects; building a repertoire of teaching methods appropriate to the curriculum purpose; the role of a curriculum leader, whether in a school, phase or subject discipline. The session will use examples from Mick’s recent book, ‘The Curious Curriculum’ (written with Claire Banks) which describes the development of curriculum and teaching in a group of primary schools over a period of five years. The day will be fast paced, offering short talks, guided discussion and practical examples for use in classrooms. Discussions are taking place about the opportunity, during the next school year, to engage in focused workshops on aspects of the role of subject and curriculum leaders. The extended programme would include aspects of implementation and managing impact such as: agreeing values and principles for the subject discipline; auditing the strength of the subject discipline in school; planning the development of the subject in terms of progression and width; organisation and resourcing; managing professional development sessions; coaching in classrooms; getting the best from educational visits and visitors to school; gathering and using appropriate data and evidence; spreading good practice and reducing poor practice. There will be a chance to consider this on the day. The cost of the day is included for schools purchasing the Core Offer to RoSIS and Learn Sheffield and places are limited to 2 per setting, initially. For non-subscribing schools the cost is £95 per person. Details of any follow-on work and costings will be published later in the summer term.
