Service Description

Scottish writer, Barbara Henderson writes shorter length, historical novels with links to Scotland. The focus of this visit is Rivet Boy - a Victorian novel with a difference. Rather than a chimmney sweep or some poor soul in a workhouse, the main character of this book is a young lad employed to help with the construction of the Forth bridge. Not that his working conditions were any better - or safer - than those of a chimney sweep! Rivet Boy is based on the true story of a boy who really did fall off the Forth Bridge and survive and the tame squirrel was real too! Whether the Victorians are part of your currciulum or not, this book is a great insight into life back than and Barabara is an engaing speaker.
